The Shmitah Revolution: A Good Thing? (50 mins)

April 16, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

About Session

Without a doubt, one of the great biblical institutions of justice is the Shmitah year and its big brother, Jubilee. Together, they offer an environmental and economic model that is nothing less than revolutionary. But the rabbis are anxious. In this session, I will argue that the rabbis build a competing and very different model for justice, which they call Tikkun Olam. How does the courageous Shmitah biblical vision of justice compare to the classical rabbinic vision of Tikkun Olam. And how do these visions guide us, especially in this moment of Climate Crisis?
